“We were... very strategic on how we discussed it and what we talked about.”

Pusha-T’s DAYTONA is up for Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammys, and has landed on year-end lists across a wide array of media outlets. However, the biggest story of the year surrounding the G.O.O.D. Music president continues to be his feud with Drake, which culminated in the release of the scathing diss track, “The Story of Adidon.” In a new interview with The Associated Press, the rapper revealed that he was worried the controversy would overshadow the rollout of his album, which dropped just four days before his diss track.

“That was a concern during that whole time,” he said. “I always felt that I had rap album of the year. I always knew it. That was a bit of distraction in regards to me being able to campaign that from the day that I put out the album up until something like the Grammys. That was a bit of a distraction. We were sort of strategic about that. Very strategic on how we discussed it and what we talked about, because that wasn’t part of the album. That was extra credit.”

Although Push is typically regarded as the winner of their beef due to Drake’s lack of a response track, the ensuing controversy has played a role in nearly every interview he’s done since the release of his album. Genius previously broke down “The Story of Adidon”:

Drake ended up with more overall Grammys nominations, but he wasn’t given a Best Rap Album nod. “I wasn’t surprised,” Push said of Drake’s omission from the category. “I think everybody needs to stay in their respective category. I don’t think me and him are in the same category.”

Pusha will face off against Cardi B, Travis Scott, Nipsey Hussle, and the late Mac Miller for Best Rap Album, while Drake will compete for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and more. Revisit all of the 2019 Grammys nominations here.
